Atypical antipsychotic are increasingly becoming prescribed for the treatment of multiple conditions associated with psychosis in older patients. Recent studies, however, have indicated that patients who receive atypical antipsychotic drugs are at increased risk for developing a host of metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes, abnormal lipid profiles, and hyperprolactinemia.
