Maintaining physical activity is an important facet of successful aging. Recent guidelines suggest that physicians should approach physical activity in their elderly patients in much the same way they approach any other necessary therapy—with a pen and prescription pad. In this way, physicians can encourage and guide their patients to improve their physical health and activity levels. The end goal will be to ensure protection against chronic diseases and other conditions of the aging physique.

In patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), clinicians should use patient risk factors for stroke—rather than the ability to achieve and maintain proper heart rhythm—to determine whether to initiate anti-clotting therapy, according to revised "Guidelines for the Management of Patients with Atrial Fibrillation," released by the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and the European Society of Cardiology.
